October is National Pizza Month – Who knew?
Since you may have been as in the dark about this as I was, I thought I’d gear us up for the BIG event with the following post. No reason to panic, people! This gives us two whole weeks to prepare. (You’re welcome.)

When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore!
According to Dino, pizza is the litmus test for love. And some 3 billion pies per year (350 slices per second!) consumed in the U.S. alone proves we all love it. So let’s “deep dish” on the subject, why don’t we?
Spring, summer, winter or fall, pizza enhances our revelries year round.
What begs conviviality more than the lower-crust (sorry, couldn’t resist) corner pizza joint with its red leatherette booths and checkered tablecloths?
Or a woven, wicker-wrapped bottle of house vino & a little slice of heaven served by waitresses who tend to be a little saucy themselves?
With so many striking variants on the classic, pizza seems to have a multiple-personality disorder.
Whether it’s the portable, foldable, famed NYC-style (the secret’s in the water, people!); Sicilian; Neapolitan; Chicago deep-dish; wood-burning, California-style with truffle oil; or boardwalk pizza at the Jersey shore, we’re a nation obsessed.
And then there’s the delicious history: Margherita pizza was first made in honor of the Queen consort of Italy, Margherita of Savoy, in the colors of the Italian flag.
How fortunate for pizza lovers everywhere that tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil fell so handily into the red, white & green color palate.
It’s hard not to find immediate solace in melted cheese. And whether your preferred flavor profile includes thick or thin crust, pepperoni or plain, most succumb or are converted, usually from an early age, to pizza worship.
There are countless options, each with defenders and detractors; yet when it comes to pizza, there’s one thing we all have in common: love at first bite.
Let the pizza wars begin! What’s your favorite? I’ll start.
For its healthy(ish) benefits, I usually go for veggie pizza on a whole-wheat crust. But if I had my druthers it would be pizza from any one of my favorite pizza joints in Colorado:
